A systems-led identity for a generative brand tool, turning one idea into hundreds of on-brand assets without the brand itself ever looking like it was made by a machine.

The idea

Tessel makes hundreds of assets from one idea, so the obvious trap was a logo that looked like a thousand things at once. We went the other way. A tessellation is a single shape that fills a plane without gaps, and that felt honest: one rule, repeated well. The identity needed to prove the product’s claim by being a system itself.

The work

One hexagonal tile is the entire mark. Every other element in the identity, from the wordmark’s letter widths to the grid behind the website, is built from multiples of it. We wrote the brand guidelines as a set of rules rather than examples, then fed those rules into Tessel’s own engine to produce the launch campaign. The tool designed its own adverts.

What happened

The launch campaign ran across three markets with no extra design time at all, and Tomás used that fact in his investor deck. The guidelines are now the template Tessel hands to new customers. I think of it as the first brand I designed partly by writing.
